Neptune conjoined Pluto three separate times between 1891 and 1892The American Century (link to book review), broadly described as the 20th Century, really began in the 1890s and never really ended. The 1890s also contained the Neptune-Pluto conjunction, renewing the 495-year cycle between the two. This half-millennial cycle coincides with issues in proportion to its length. Think in terms of Bronze Age or Hellenization. Yes, the American Century is that important.

During the 1880s, Nietzsche declared ‘God is Dead’. The full quote is ‘God is dead God remains dead. And we have killed him.’ He was speaking of a globally prevalent mindset, whether US citizens recognize it or not. Nietzsche was talking about how humans supplanted nature in just about every aspect of life. This substitution is apparent in the United States more than most places and an existential challenge everywhere.

New frontiers

Also during the 1880s, NikolaTesla, Thomas Edison and others finalized inventions that further helped humans overcome nature. They put in place the wiring, component and utility designs that continue to deliver electricity to millions. It is also a design that leads our planet into the Anthropocene Era. It is more than symbolic that General Electric, under robber baron JP Morgan, incorporated in New York state in 1892,  Neptune within a few minutes of Pluto.18920415 GeneralElectricIncorporated outers

The United States taught the world how to break other natural frontiers. It completed in 1869 transcontinental railroad, which (along with the Suez Canal) helped release the interior of continents to global markets. To complete the coast-to-coat railway, contractors literally blew through mountains. Apparently, millions of years of geological formations were no match for explosive ingenuity.

Another frontier opened while the official US one closed. The US government declared its frontier closed in 1890, with Neptune within a few degrees of Pluto and two years before Ellis Island opened.

From country to city

This Mass Migration involved more than moving from one location to another. Many moved from rural to urban lives, another sign of paradigm change.  European citizens moved from their farms because booming US factories could guarantee employment.

"The Atlantic Migration towers above all other historical migrations in magnitude, and possibly also in significance..."
A History of the Modern World, p. 565

Industry favors urban life. Industry requires workers able to work regular hours after a reasonable commute. It requires not only skilled
workers, but universities to provide engineers, administrators, doctors and clerks. Because the United States at the end of the 19th Century had plenty of land and copious resources, all it needed were the personnel to complete the equation. One of the largest migrations in human history provided it.

At the nexus of paradigm change

We can surmise that the US was at the right place at the right time, missing a more profound observation. The United States was in perfect position to take advantage of the Second Industrial Revolution that took off right after the 1850s Uranus-Pluto conjunction. But one of the reasons it began and came together as a nation-state has much to do with what happened during the 1399-1891 Neptune cycle the 1890s conjunction ended.

The overwhelming theme of 1399Neptune-Pluto1891 centers around the shift from theocracy to globally accepted secularism. Secularism gives rise to the nation-state and the United States may have been the prototype.

The quest for religious freedom stands out as one the raison d’etre for settlers going to North America. It was also one the major themes that ran throughout 1399Neptune-Pluto1891. One of its major turning points, twin turning points really,  the Peace of Westphalia and the English Civil War of the 1640s defined Europe's 17th, 18th and 20th Centuries.

1648influenceonamericancenturyThe 1648 Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty and Eighty Years Wars, settled the religious wars of Europe. It permitted sovereigns to determine how citizens could worship in their territories. 1648 was  the same year as a Neptune-Pluto opposition, the midpoint of the 1399-1891 cycle between the two planets. More important to this discussion, it gave Protestantism room to grow. It also marked the beginning of the end of Roman Catholic stifling influence over just about everything.

The Age of Reason begins here or soon after. More important than what it began was what it was. The Age of Reason very much sought to overturn what it saw as superstition, engendered, in part, to keep the Church in power.

In this atmosphere, the colonies grew from mere encampments into economies worth fighting over. Immediately after the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell built on previous naval efforts. Over the coming decades, the English went on to claim hegemony over the seas by pushing out the Dutch, their only credible oceanic foe; this is when New Amsterdam became New York.

The colonies, mostly Protestant, built their culture as the Age of Reason turned into the Enlightenment. One of the Enlightenment’s most influential people, John Locke, inspired the founders. He advocated for Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Property versus Jefferson’s Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

What would become the United States of America could borrow from the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment because it had no entrenched aristocracy beholden to a monarch or anyone else. In parallel, the Industrial Revolution took off in the 18th Century, just as the population of North America began to grow. What could be mpore secular than the Industrial Revolution?

Past as prologue

We all know the history, so there is no need to repeat it. We can easily see, however, that in the end  the Neptune-Pluto cycle, 1399-1891, closely suited the creation and success of the United States. The idea of nation-state, contracts between the people and government, the secular nature of capitalism, all helped to lead the USA poised to best leverage its advantage. Yes, mostly friendly neighbors, copious resources, a bounty of rivers and a generally eager population play a major role. Keep in mind, though, what became the 50 states of the USA could easily have been many more nations; European states up until the 1860s thought they could retake what that thought was theirs. Success was never guaranteed. The American Century that coincided with the 1890s Neptune-Pluto conjunction turned those circumstances into a completely new direction.Neptune 90 Pluto 2062combo

The USA succeeds, whatever one may opine about its success, because it is a secular nation that hits its stride as the world most definitively turned away from theocracy to a globally accepted secularism. Now, though, the tale has flipped. The challenge is how to best use secularism. That the USA ushered in the Atomic Age and leads the world in emissions per capita go hand-in-hand with what secularism produces. As we move closer to the influence of the 2050s Neptune-Pluto opening square, how the world adapts to this overarching theme of 1892Neptune-Pluto2384, the US plays a pivotal role in meet its inevitable challenges.
